She creates paintings and works in glass that range from articulating the ways in which we are suffering with the devastating environmental consequences of modern capitalism, to exploring how we might end that suffering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">As an artist in residence at the Bay Area Bullseye Resource Center, she created glass panels that explore the cognitive dissonance she experiences from living in today\u2019s society while coming to understand the ecological crises we face. She showed this work at Bullseye\u2019s show \u201cIn Residence: Bay Area\u201d and at Women Eco Artist Dialog\u2019s (WEAD) juried show \u201cReclaiming Earth.\u201d She co-curated \u201cPatterns of Disintegration\u201d at Works Gallery in San Jos\u00e9, CA, which also included her paintings made with air pollution sediment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Most recently her watercolors that reflect how she\u2019d like to feel personally and in society were included in Richmond Art Center\u2019s online show \u201cThis Land Is Me,\u201d which was part of the international series \u201cExtraction: Art at the Edge of the Abyss.\u201d Paintings from this body of work were also in \u201cThe Power of Empathy,\u201d an online juried show by Women Eco Artist Dialog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Van Engel completed a BA in Economics and French Studies from Wesleyan University, a BFA in Painting and Drawing from California College of the Arts, and an MFA in Pictorial Art at San Jos\u00e9 State University. Before devoting herself to art, she spent a decade working for environmental organizations in Jackson, WY.
